Sealants provide an important extra layer of protection against cavities by covering those deep grooves and pits in teeth that are most prone to decay. While beneficial for many, they're especially recommended for certain groups.
- Children and Teenagers: They are ideal candidates, often as soon as their first permanent molars erupt (typically around age 6) and throughout the cavity-prone years of ages 6 to 16.
- Adults: If you have deep grooves or pits in your teeth that haven't developed decay yet, sealants can be a great preventative measure.
- Young Children (Baby Teeth): In some cases, our doctors may recommend applying sealants to baby teeth if they have deep grooves and the child is particularly susceptible to cavities.
Applying dental sealants is a quick, painless, and straightforward procedure, usually taking only a few minutes per tooth. Here's a general overview of what to expect:
First, we thoroughly clean and dry the tooth that will receive the sealant. We'll then surround the area with cotton to keep it dry. Next, a special solution is applied to gently roughen the enamel surface; this helps the sealant bond more effectively to your tooth. After rinsing and drying the tooth again, the sealant material is carefully painted onto the chewing surface, filling in the deep grooves or pits. Depending on the type of sealant used, it will either harden on its own or with the help of a curing light.
