Dental Care After Your Dentist Appointment

After your oral surgery, you will want to wait at least 2 hours before eating to help ease your recovery. Eating before 2 hours can be problematic because you cannot feel all areas of your mouth due to the remaining anesthesia. Full and detailed instructions will be given to you by your doctor or dental assistant after the operation. What follows is simply an overview.

Root Canal Therapy

A root canal procedure will result in soreness for a few days. It’s important to touch the temporary restorative material (filling) as little as possible so that it may set properly; this includes eating on the opposite side of your mouth. You will also take an antibiotic to address any infection that may be remaining. If you notice an increase in pain or tenderness, a reaction to the medication, or if you have lost the temporary restoration, then you should call us immediately.

Dental Crowns | Dental Bridges

Before you receive your permanent crown or bridge you will receive a temporary restoration. The temporary isn’t as sturdy as the permanent, so you’ll need to use special care when cleaning and eating. The area should be brushed gently and flossed without scraping upwards, which can dislodge a temporary crown or bridge. When eating, you should avoid chewy or sticky foods.

It's normal to experience irritation after your permanent or temporary is placed. The discomfort will subside when the soft tissue heals, but you can reduce the symptoms with a warm salt water rinse or pain medication. When you brush and floss your new veneer, you will want to pay special attention to the area between the veneer and the tooth at the gum line. Soon the veneer will feel just like your natural teeth.

Dental Fillings & Bonding

Your teeth will typically be sensitive for a few days following the procedure, so it’s advisable to have your food and drinks at room temperature. After an adjustment period, you can care for your fillings as you do your own teeth to ensure they last a long time.

Scaling And Root Planing

You will likely experience soreness after this procedure for several days. By doing a warm salt-water rinse 2-3 times daily, you can relieve pain while also cleansing the affected area. You will be able to continue to brush and floss immediately following your procedure, but you will want to exercise care. A cold compress or pain-relieving medication can alleviate swelling or stiffness. While you're recovering, you will want to avoid excessive chewing and sticky foods. If your pain or swelling has not subsided within a few days after the procedure, then you should call us.

Dental Veneers

You will have a temporary restoration put in before your permanent veneer is placed. The temporary will require delicate care while eating, brushing, and flossing. Brush and floss gently, and opt for foods that are easy to chew.

Wisdom Teeth

Due to the anesthesia, you will need to be driven home after your surgery and allowed to rest for a while. It’s normal for the area to bleed for a short time following surgery, so you will need to change your gauze as necessary. When you get home, sit or lay in a position that keeps your head elevated above the rest of your body. If it has been 24 hours since your procedure and you’re still bleeding, you should call us right away. Pain medication will be prescribed by your dentist and may be taken as directed, as well as using an ice pack periodically through your recovery time.

Eating And Drinking After Your Dentist Appointment

Soft foods will be best for a few days while you recover. Here are some that we would suggest eating:

  • Gelatin/Jello
  • Pudding
  • Yogurt
  • Mashed Potatoes
  • Ice Cream
  • Thin Soups
  • Other foods that don't require chewing.

You will want to stay away from straws during recovery as they can loosen your sutures and impede the clotting process. Smoking should also be avoided.

Should you experience prolonged pain, bleeding, or irritation then please call so we can help you.
