Tips to heal quickly after having your wisdom teeth removed

11 Feb, 2018 |

What are Wisdom Teeth?

Wisdom teeth are the molars located in the very back of the mouth that don’t begin growing until at least the age of 16. There are four of these teeth in total, two situated at the top of the mouth and two situated at its bottom. They typically take a few years to fully grow in, although some people never get their wisdom teeth.

When is Wisdom Teeth Extraction Necessary?

The following issues may indicate you should consider wisdom teeth removal:

  • Damage to Other Teeth: When wisdom teeth cause damage to the surrounding teeth and lead to issues like shifting other teeth, it can result in pain and bite problems.
  • Jaw Damage: Sometimes, cysts can form around the wisdom teeth. This can damage the nerves in your jaw if the problem isn’t treated.
  • Sinus Problems: Problematic wisdom teeth can cause congestion, sinus pressure and sinus pain.
  • Inflamed Gums: It can sometimes be difficult to properly clean the gums around wisdom teeth, which can lead to inflammation of the gums and eventually periodontal disease.
  • Cavities: Wisdom teeth are frequently affected by cavities due to the overdevelopment of bacteria.
  • Alignment: If your wisdom teeth become impacted, it can lead to poor alignment of the teeth or crowding, which makes it difficult to practice the best oral hygiene and can result in the need for straightening the teeth. How Can You Heal Quickly After Wisdom Teeth Extraction?

One of the most important things to think about after you have had your wisdom teeth removed is how to feel better sooner.

Soft Foods

Of course, you will have to be careful about what you eat for a few days after wisdom teeth extraction. You should stick to foods that are soft or liquid-based to keep your pain to a minimum. Foods like soup, yogurt, pudding, Jell-O, mashed potatoes and ice cream are good choices because they can make you feel full and are easy to eat. Within a week or two, you will be able to return to enjoying your favorite regular foods.

Pain Management

Take any medications that your dentist or oral surgeon has prescribed, whether they are prescription or simply over-the-counter. On the same day after your surgery, make sure to restrict your normal everyday activities and relax as well.

Ice

Another way to heal faster after having your wisdom teeth removed is to apply ice packs to either side of your face as needed. It can help to numb the area to ease the pain and reduce any swelling.
