What is Invisalign?
Invisalign is a method for straightening the teeth that is a viable alternative to metal braces. For anyone who is bothered by unsightly metal braces, this is an excellent option. Invisalign is growing in popularity for many reasons.
The main benefit of Invisalign is that the clear plastic aligners are almost invisible. They are also more comfortable than their metal braces counterpart. They also do not run the risk of cutting up your mouth. Moreover, for those concerned with the cleanliness of metal braces, Invisalign is removable too so that cleaning teeth and the Invisalign trays is done with ease.
How are Invisalign aligners created?
The Invisalign aligners are created by using advanced 3D computer-imaging technology to create a virtual impression of your teeth. When you go for Invisalign, you will be shown how the treatment will work on the computer. You will see a comparison of how the teeth will move from the position they are in now to the position you wish them to be in. The dentist will either order a set of clear aligners or create them in office for you by using the 3D model of your teeth.
How many Invisalign aligners are needed?
The Invisalign trays will move the teeth a little bit at a time. Once the teeth have moved to the position the particular tray you are wearing is forcing them into, new trays are needed. Generally speaking, the trays are worn for approximately two weeks, before new ones are required to replace them. The trays work together in a series, slowly moving your teeth into the desired and ideal position. Each tray has its part to play in the process. The number of trays you will need and the time it will take overall will depend on the severity of the condition of your teeth. The more misaligned they are, the longer it will take, and the more trays are needed to straighten them out. However, each tray will move your teeth about 0.25mm. On average, it takes about 12 months for Invisalign to move the teeth, so that works out to about 26 trays on average if your teeth move the required amount in the two-week period.
How long per day do you have to wear Invisalign aligners?
If you want to change the trays and realign the teeth on the quickest possible time, you have to wear the trays for the correct number of hours each day, usually a minimum of 20-22 hours. Ideally though, you should wear them 24 hours a day.
