Bonding and White Fillings

Serving Meridian & Eagle Residents | Office in Eagle, Idaho

“Bonding refers to a composite resin that is molded onto the teeth with adhesive gel. The resin is hardened under ultraviolet light and then polished. This creates a smooth, white finished smile.”

– Dr. Jacob Brown

Bonding is a clear choice for patients with cracks, gaps, fillings, or discoloration. It typically lasts for over ten years and is safe and affordable.

Those with silver amalgam fillings may want to consider white fillings as an easy improvement to your smile.

Bondings are the materials used to fill cavities in teeth. Dental bonding can help fix chipped, cracked, discolored, or misaligned teeth. They are also used to close spaces between teeth. White fillings contain zinc-oxide eugenol, a temporary material soon replaced by natural tooth enamel over time.

White fillings do not require the removal of much tooth enamel, which means you can keep most of your natural tooth structure intact throughout this procedure. On the other hand, resin (composite) fillings must remove much more enamel during their placement and thus are not recommended for teeth that have deep decay or large cavities.

Bonding can be used to correct minor cosmetic flaws, which is why your dentist might recommend this treatment for teeth that are chipped, discolored, or have gaps between them. It may also be used as a temporary measure until more extensive restorations can be done.

White fillings are most often recommended for restoring the primary (baby) teeth. Since these teeth aren't permanent, they don't need to be fixed with durable materials like gold and porcelain crowns. Composite fillings can also be used for baby teeth, but your dentist may only recommend them if the tooth has minor decay or there is not enough healthy tooth left to prepare a shape conducive for placing a crown.

The process of bonding is relatively straightforward. First, your dentist will clean your teeth and apply a mild etching solution to roughen the surface. This helps the bonding material adhere better to your tooth's enamel. Your dentist will then brush on a thin layer of resin (or another type of dental adhesive) and press a composite resin into the teeth.

Please note that when this procedure is used to restore primary (baby) teeth, it does not involve any numbing procedures. Your dentist will apply a protective shield over your lips and gums, so you do not swallow or inhale any of the resin or adhesive they use.

Restorations made with dental bonding materials are not permanent. They must be replaced just like regular fillings, but the procedure is relatively easy and does not require local anesthetic or conscious sedation.

White fillings are indeed considered temporary treatments for decayed teeth (since they will eventually wear away). If the decay continues to progress under a white filling, your dentist may need to replace it with a more durable restoration such as a gold or porcelain crown.

Dental bonding is an entirely reversible treatment that requires little preparation of the tooth surface. It is also much less expensive than other cosmetic treatments such as dental veneers.
